Kabalana is part of Ahangama’s surf coastline. The beach break and the offshore reef known as The Rock are different surfing environments. For a first lesson, we look for suitable smaller waves in the beach area; we do not send beginners out to the reef.
Sandbanks, swell, tide, wind and crowds change the session. A sandy beach does not make every day suitable for learning. Tell us your experience and comfort in the water so your instructor can plan with you.
Before entering the water, practise your pop-up, get familiar with the board and talk through the session. Our 90-minute lessons include beach practice, in-water coaching, a surfboard, rash guard and zinc.

The Rock, Kabalana
An offshore reef break for experienced surfers in suitable conditions. It is a different proposition from a beginner session near the beach.
Nearby Ahangama breaks
Reef spots such as Marshmallow, Sticks and the Midigama breaks have different characteristics. Discuss them with your instructor rather than choosing by name alone.
Intermediate lessons include tuk tuk transport to another suitable spot when needed, with no extra transport charge.

Our ISA-certified intermediate surf coaching in Ahangama works on wave reading, positioning, timing, generating speed and turns. Your instructor helps choose the break and focus for the session.

Is Kabalana suitable for beginner surfers?
The beach area can offer suitable waves for beginners in the right conditions. Your instructor chooses the session area and timing. The offshore reef at The Rock is separate and is not our beginner lesson area.
