Start with where you are today

Choosing a lesson is easier when you think about what you can do comfortably and what you’d like help with. Perhaps you’re meeting a surfboard for the first time. Perhaps you’ve had lessons and want more confidence with timing or positioning. At Ashen Surf School in Kabalana, our family and local instructors talk through your experience before recommending a session. There’s no test to pass and no need to overstate your ability.

When a beginner lesson makes sense

Our beginner coaching is designed for first-timers and early progress. It includes beach practice and guidance in the water, with space to repeat the basics. The private lesson for one person is LKR 7,000; one person joining a group pays LKR 6,000. Every lesson lasts 90 minutes and includes a board, rash guard, and zinc. If you’ve tried surfing before but still want support with the foundations, tell us and we can discuss the best fit.

When you’re ready for intermediate coaching

Intermediate lessons focus on technique, turns, timing, positioning, and confidence. The private rate for one person is LKR 9,000, or LKR 7,000 for one person joining a group. Conditions help shape the session. If Kabalana is not suitable, we can travel to another spot, with tuk tuk transport included at no extra charge. Your instructor helps decide the plan rather than expecting you to choose a break yourself.

A board that suits your session

Our rental selection includes soft tops, funboards, and shortboards. Soft tops offer a stable introduction for practising balance and paddle control. Funboards can be a step towards more flow and turning, while shortboards are intended for experienced surfers seeking performance. Those descriptions are a starting point, not a rule for choosing alone. Discuss your ability, the conditions, and the board’s size with our team before heading out.

Renting for an hour, a day, or longer

Hourly and daily board rentals are available, with discounts for longer rentals. We check boards daily for safety. Ask about the current selection and prices when you visit or send an inquiry in advance. If you’re choosing between a rental and a lesson, tell us what you’d like to work on. A little local guidance can help you decide how to spend your time in the water, and leave you with a plan that suits your own progress.
